Core purpose of the role

The Network Engineer: Firewalls is primary responsible for the end-to-end management of the organisation’s firewall infrastructure, including, but not limited to, the design, implementation, monitoring and management thereof. The responsibilities include setting up of secure inter- and intra-organisation communication channels, such as virtual private networks (VPNs) and IPSec tunnels. The role is also responsible for providing specialist advice and support in the development, implementation and maintenance of general network engineering across the organisation in respect of the local area networks (LAN and WLAN), wireless networks (WiFi), wide area networks (WAN) and Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) to ensure maximum uptime for the organisation’s user community.

Key deliverables and outputs

1.Review client requirements and collaborate with other IT engineers to define the optimal networking and firewalling solutions in accordance with organisational policies.
2.Design and implement new network solutions and/or improve the efficiency of current networks.
3.Configure firewalls for usage, manage their day-to-day operations and perform regular maintenance through upgrades and patches to ensure optimal performance, maximise network efficiency and security.
4.Configure, manage and maintain secure intra- and inter-organisational communication channels, such as VPNs and IPSec tunnels.
5.Perform quarterly firewall health checks removing unnecessary rules, interfaces, etc. and optimising rules where possible.
6.Assist with the installation, configuration and support of network equipment across the LAN, WLAN, WAN and SD-WAN, both wired and wireless.
7.Participate in cross-functional troubleshooting support for internal and external clients and network fault investigations.
8.Liaise with network service providers and vendors, ensuring service level agreements are met and organisational policies and principles adhered to.
9.Maximise network performance through ongoing monitoring and optimisation.
10.Ensure supporting documentation and diagrams remain up to date.
11.Ensure all network equipment is sufficiently secured (logically and physically), so that no unauthorised access can be gained.
12.Provide monthly reporting as required.
•A 3-year degree (or equivalent) in computer science
•Network-related certifications, preferably CCNP
•Fortinet NSE4
•5 - 7 years’ practical experience IT experience with at least 5 years’ experience in networking
•At least 3 – 4 years’ experience in firewall administration and/or firewall management
•At least 2 – 3 years’ experience in network design.
•Fortinet certifications – NSE5
•Aruba ClearPass


•Good understanding of network architecture, design principles and topologies (across all areas of LAN, WLAN, WAN, SD-WAN and WiFi networks).
•Good understanding of firewall technologies and related industry technology developments.
•Understanding of network security principles and concepts.
•Good ITIL knowledge
