Introduction
In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Impact Centre draws on diverse perspectives, skills and partnerships to generate, measure and communicate impactful research on critical challenges facing South Africa and the world.
In fulfilling the HSRC’s public good mandate, the Impact Centre will conduct rigorous, creative and relevant impact research for the public good; conduct large-scale quantitative and representative surveys that are the basis for complex data analytics, modelling and simulations and leverage a wide range of expertise, convene multi-stakeholder forums, promote and produce evidence-informed understanding on impact.

The Vision of the Impact Centre is: we are an influential voice that engages society on impactful and innovative research in pursuit of a better South Africa and world.


The Mission of the Impact Centre draws on diverse perspectives, skills and partnerships to generate, measure and communicate impactful research on critical challenges facing South Africa and the world.

The emergence of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a global pandemic has created a need for evidence-based policy responses. Mitigation of the spread of the virus, and managing its complex impacts, requires a comprehensive understanding and awareness of the socio-economic and psycho-social effects of the pandemic. There is a growing call for social scientists and humanities scholars to engage with policy actors to help shape the mitigation policies and inform inclusive policy decisions and to synthesise already available research to produce documents that effectively engage policymakers. There is also increasing acknowledgement of the value of engaging policymakers in a diversity of language to harness the multilingual nature of the South African Society. In recognition of this, the HSRC through the Impact Centre made a calls for policy briefs on the multi-dimensional effects of COVID-19 to society and are looking to contract suitably qualified candidates to translate selected HSRC policy briefs into Sepedi and Isizulu.

The following are the key responsibilities for the policy brief translators


Key Responsibilities:
•Translate selected policy briefs in Sepedi
•Provide written feedback on the cultural sensitivity of the language used


Key Requirements:
•Suitable translation qualifications
•Proven experience in translating documents into the selected language

•A comprehensive CV, a letter of motivation, publications and the details of three recent referees (with telephone, fax and e-mail contact details).
•An example of one sample translation previously done
