The Middleware manager manages a team of engineers responsible for the operation of a 24/7 global middleware environment. Their primary responsibilities include overseeing the design, implementation, management, and monitoring of the middleware technology infrastructure. Design the interface between application systems, including those developed in house, packaged software, and third-party-hosted applications, so that they function holistically in support of the organization's business needs. Support the development of the three to five year strategic roadmap aligning with the overall enterprise direction. Responsible for managing the operations of the Middleware infrastructure environments and to ensure the operation is in accordance with established procedures and practices. This is accomplished through monitoring performance of middleware applications and coordinating technology deployment and delivery schedules. Additional responsibilities cover the identification of requirements for infrastructure and operations expansion based on current and projected capacity needs and well as the establishment of software and operating system standards.

Horizon Scanning
Explore and develop a detailed understanding of external developments or emerging issues and evaluate their potential impact on, or usefulness to, the organization. Identify and define new middleware technologies to fit specialized business needs and configurations.

Analysis of "As Is" and "To Be"
Document the most complex "as is" and "to be" processes and describe the changes required to migrate to the "to be" capability to record accurately the change required.

Design and Conceptualization
Work effectively with cross-functional teams to conceptualize products and services, leveraging data to drive original design ideas and decisions. Evaluate new products and engage team in proof of concepts.

Enterprise Infrastructure Modernization
Drive advances in technologies and architectures to increase the value delivered by technology and digital capabilities, either through improvements to the efficiency of technology environment or through those that reduce the total cost of technology operations. Recommend and participate in activities related to the design, development and maintenance of the digital capabilities within the enterprise architecture.

Application Software Roadmap
Define and maintain a road map to facilitate application software development and ensure the development work is prioritized in line with business requirements. Organize, plan, coordinate and schedule projects, maintenance activities and manage the Middleware life cycle.

Application Software Development & Maintenance
Develop existing and new applications by analyzing and identifying areas for modification and improvement. Develop new applications to meet customer requirements. Continually monitor the Middleware environments and all corresponding components for availability. Establish and maintain appropriate quality control systems for the validation of data input and output. Maintain and schedule satisfactory equipment maintenance.

Integration Platform Maintenance and Production Support
Monitor, identify, and correct the most complex platform stability and evolution of the platform to maintain fully functioning platform for all environments. Ensure availability, capacity, scalability and reliability of the respective approved integration platforms. Establish and maintain internal and vendor support procedures and escalation processes are in place to ensure resolution of issues and an optimization of systems.

Stakeholder Engagement
Identify and manage stakeholders up to management level, finding out their needs/issues/concerns and reacting to these by leading and coordinating the development of stakeholder engagement plans to support the communication of business information and decisions. Communicate regularly with senior management to report on operations performance. Maintain open communications with business user management to keep them apprised of operational situations that impact or may impact their respective
areas. Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders inside and outside Information Systems. Work with business partners to communicate overall technology capacity related to business priorities for the specific business services / processes under responsibility. Partner with technology teams to engage business partners and vendors in developing technology / product strategies.

Technical Developments Recommendation
Discuss and recommend more complex or innovative technical developments tom improve quality of the website/portal/application software and supporting infrastructure to better meet users’ needs. Recommend, schedule upgrades and patches within the Middleware environments. Provide consultation and technical solutions to management on complex systems integration, complex distributed java applications, compatibility, expandability, ease of use, and multiple platform issues as they relate to middleware.

Insights and Reporting
Contribute to the design and creation of reporting strategies and templates. Lead execution of complex reports, identifying and interpreting complex patterns and trends, and translating those insights into actionable recommendations. Conduct routine meetings with key business partners to review / discuss overall technology performance for the specific functional areas under responsibility.

Leadership and Direction
Identify and communicate the actions needed to implement the function's strategy and business plan within the business area or department; explain the relationship to the broader organization's mission, vision and values; motivate people to commit to these and to doing extraordinary things to achieve local business goals. Create and maintain development plans for each team member, including training, skills assessment, career planning, and goal planning. Manage personal growth objectives for the team members in conjunction with Career Development Plans.

Performance Management
Develop and propose own performance objectives; take appropriate actions to ensure achievement of agreed objectives, using the organization's performance management systems to improve personal performance. Manage and report on team performance; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project / account team members and hold them accountable for achieving these, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team / personal objectives. Develop and manage to Key Performance Indicators. Plan, schedule and supervise around the clock technology operations including emergency situations requiring the manager's attention after normal business hours to insure continual operations. Review operating key performance indicators of middleware operations resources utilization and performance. Monitor workload of staff to ensure team members are consistently managed and challenged.

Policies and Procedures Development and Implementation
Develop policies, procedures, and related guidelines for an important area of responsibility within a function, ensuring compliance with external requirements and integration with the broader functional policy framework. Develop procedure and interpret and applies policy for area of expertise to achieve specified outputs, or advise the wider business on application of policy, then monitor implementation of those procedures within the organization. Develop standards, procedures, and processes to support and facilitate effective management of the Middleware environments.

Building Capability
Implement formal development integration, automaton, and BizDevSecOps for a substantial department. Provide others throughout the organization with informal coaching and mentoring. Plan and direct optimum utilization of middleware-based applications and
associated staff to meet company objectives. The software that acts as a bridge between an operating system or database and applications, especially on a network and/or cloud. Work with HR and Resource Management to define and implement programs to
address changes in resourcing, career mobility, career development and reward / recognition initiatives. Identify ways to share resources across business services / processes to promote information sharing and career / skill development through job rotation.

Information Security
Lead in detecting and analyzing middleware security incidents including attacks, breaches, and identified vulnerabilities and remediate any security gaps in line with the security incident management procedure. Plan, coordinate, investigate and implement security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification or disclosure.

Business Requirements Identification
Collect business requirements using a variety of methods such as interviews, document analysis, workshops, and workflow analysis to express the requirements in terms of target user roles and goals.

Continuous Improvement
Review existing operations in a major area of work and implement innovation processes to generate new ideas and ensure the required continuous improvement outcomes are delivered. Continually analyze and assess existing processes, procedures, and standards for potential improvements and efficiencies. Participate in and support cross technology process improvement initiatives.

Personal Capability Building
Act as subject matter expert in an area of technology, policy, regulation, or operational management for the team. Maintain external accreditations and indepth understanding of current and emerging external regulation and industry best practices through continuing professional development, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.

Project Management
Deliver small-scale or medium-scale projects while working within an established program management plan. Manages middleware projects and assesses risk, cost, and return on investment scenarios and their impact as well as potential compatibility issues with existing hardware/software. Coordinate, schedule and plan the installation of middleware-based technologies and applications.

Software Budgeting and Costing
Manage the Middleware software budget plans for the department. Responsible for data processing supplies inventory and procurement.
General Education
Grade 12/ SAQA Accredited Equivalent (Essential);
Relevant Degree or Diploma in Information Technology/Science (Essential)

General Experience
6 or more years' experience in a Middleware Manager\Integration Manager role (Essential);
Experience in a Financial Services Industry (Advantageous)

Managerial Experience
6 or more years' management experience (Essential)
