Core purpose of the role

The role is accountable for the tactical deployment and sustainment of Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) processes and resources at a Business Unit level. Further to the aforesaid, the role is responsible for training, coaching, directing, supporting and empowering Barloworld Business System Practitioners, BU Senior and BU Executive management.

Key deliverables and outputs

•Responsible for the deployment and on-going MDI Transformation at Business Unit level
•Developing and overseeing the implementation of a Business Unit MDI deployment strategy
•Developing and overseeing post MDI deployment the sustainment of MDI and related processes and practices
•Liaising with the Business Unit Opex Executive and L0 MDI Lead
•Establishing priorities for the MDI deployment at Business Unit Site Leads and Business Unit BBS Practitioner levels
•Taking responsibility for change and innovation via MDI across the Business Unit
•Building internal competencies within the Business Unit to enable a sustainable MDI infrastructure
•Engaging with Business Unit Executives and Senior management to maintain the discipline of sustainment of MDI in the Business Unit
•Ensure that MDI Processes meet agreed standards across the Business Unit
•Assist in establishing a Business Unit Mission Control Centre that features MDI activities & escalations
•Influence “down”, “across” and “up”
•Ensure that True North measures are understood and implemented across the Business Unit
•Take regular Gemba walks – use card system to highlight concerns
•Identifying “normal” vs. “abnormal” outcomes via the MDI Process Control Boards
•Coaching MDI Business Unit BBS Practitioners to embed Principles, Tools and Practices
•Resolve recurring issues via A3 thinking
•Model Servant Leadership style in Gemba walks and daily Huddles
•Create urgency – ensure MDI targets and commitments are being met
•Prepare weekly reports and updates on critical areas for improvement
•Participate in Value Stream Analysis and Rapid Improvement Events within the Business Unit
•Take appropriate action and pull the “andon” if required with Business Unit MDI Leads
•Follow up on Escalated issues and where necessary, discuss with Business Unit Executives
•Coach and guide Business Unit senior management / leadership to take active role in daily improvement
•Ensure accountability and ethics at all levels for MDI across the Business Unit
•Ensure that “Double Loop” learning takes place across the Business Unit
•Conduct Kamishibi Audits
•Apply discipline to personal standard work and own personal improvement

•Business Unit CEO/MD, Business Unit MANCO, Business Unit BBS Core team, Business Unit BBS Practitioners.

External stakeholders

•Suppliers and Customers.




Requirements

Academic qualifications


Essential:

•Bachelor Degree in Finance, Business Management, Economics or Industrial Engineering
•BBS Bronze/Silver/ certification
•Leadership Development programme or equivalent

Advantageous:

•A relevant business postgraduate qualification.
•Six Sigma certification (Black Belt).


Work experience


Essential:

•6-8 years’ experience in a business environment.
•3-5 years’ experience in a Lean environment (Continuous Improvement).
•Interaction and engagement at all Business Unit and business unit levels.
•Proven track record of success in times of business growth and/or transition.
•Proven results delivery track record.
•Successful in leading and managing cross business site / Business Unit and business unit teams with demonstrated history of delivery on tight deadlines.
•Demonstrated business acumen, analytical and financial modelling.
•Experience with continuous improvement processes and tools

Advantageous:

•Leading in a Six Sigma / Lean environment.


Knowledge

Essential:

•Expert knowledge of daily improvement processes, tools and techniques.
•Strong problem solving tools and techniques.
•Expertise knowledge in business improvement and related methodology deployment tools / techniques i.e. MDI, VSA, VSD, RIE, and A3 processes
•Deep understanding of MDI deployment methodologies.
•Thought leader in MDI execution processes and mechanisms
•Strong business acumen.
•Deep understanding of how the Business Unit & Business Unit and business unit s function, the markets they operate in, its strategic priorities and potential opportunities.
•Relevant corporate policies and processes.
