Introduction
The Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes and to interrogate wider social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

IED is looking to appoint 2 Masters Research Trainees for a period of 2 years to be based in Cape Town, Durban or Pretoria, with an interest in either education or economics research.

Key Responsibilities

1.Work with a professional research team on all aspects of policy orientated research, including conceptualisation, data collection and analysis, and participation in dissemination of findings;
2.Assist with the submission of research proposals for ethical review;
3.Conduct and organise literature reviews and other secondary data searches;
4.Undertake qualitative and quantitative fieldwork;
5.Assist with administrative matters in the research environment;
6.Contribute to the preparation of peer reviewed academic journal articles, research reports, study protocols, presentations, manuscripts and research grant proposals;
7.Participate in structured research trainee mentoring and capacity development activities; and
8.Make demonstrable progress towards the achievement of a Master’s degree

Requirements
Key Requirements:

1.Applicants for the Masters traineeship must have graduated with an Honours degree and be registered (proof of registration will be required by 31 March 2022) for a Master’s degree in the Social Sciences (particularly in areas such as Education, Sociology, Development or Economics);
2.Strong written and verbal communication skills;
3.Competence in basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
4.A sound academic record;
5.Willingness to learn through hands on engagement in a variety of research projects;
6.Intellectual and personal integrity, a well-developed work ethic, and drive;
7.Self discipline and the ability to manage both the demands of the job and ensure that university studies are timeously completed;
8.Applicants must be South African citizens.

The HSRC offers a fixed salary at this level that allows time for completion on studies.
