The Head of Finance holds the responsibility and the accountability for the leading and managing the National Finance function. The individual is responsible for optimising the strategic implementation and maintenance of the function.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategy Development and Implementation
•Formulating and implementing the firm’s business strategy at a National level
•Designing and implementing internal processes to support the financial strategy of the firm
•Project development and management of relevant strategic projects that are aligned with the financial strategy
•Team design and resource planning to ensure achievement of the financial strategy
•Fully participate in the decision making processes/forums for strategy of BDO
Month end Processes
•Ensuring that all stakeholders (management team, board of directors, auditors) receive accurate and timely financial management information
•Monthly review of all management accounts to ensure accurate and completeness of posted transactions
•Ensuring that the preparation of financial reviews, cash flow statements, financial management reports and annual accounts for audit are done timeously
•Timeous month end procedures
•Processing entries when necessary
•Assuming full responsibilty for collating and distributing month end reports
Cash flow Management
•Monitoring the cash flow on an ongoing basis
•Ensuring that there is always sufficient cash flow for salaries and creditors payment
•Managing the firm’s overdraft facilities
Policies & Procedures
•Ensuring that BDO is equipped with sound Financial Management procedures and policies
•Ensuring that Management and employees are aware of the Financial Management procedures and policies
•Developing secure polices to maintain confidential information
•Assisting with implementation of controls, policies and procedures
oTrade Payable controls
oTrade Receivable controls
•Developing effective cash flow/control systems, creditor/debtor policies & guidelines, pricing policies and a fixed asset register
•Monitoring of creditors/debtors accounts, cash position, payments control/regulation and investment of cash surplus
•Reviewing management reports for discussion at Management and Finance Committees
•Preparing adhoc reports for Senior Management and/or the CFO
•Initiating, discussing and approving management decisions in liaison with the management team
•Monitoring all expenditure and financial transactions in relation to approved budget and financial management guidelines and policies
•Monitoring the budget process and providing technical advice as required
•Guiding management in taking corrective action on deviances from approved budget plan
•Managing and monitoring departmental budgets and managing any variances and overruns
•Ensuring that employees and approvers are educated on Budget allocations
•Providing reports to the following individuals, departments and/or external contacts on a regular basis:
oWeekly management and cash flow reports to the Finance Management Team to portray financial performance and cash position of BDO debtors and creditors
oQuarterly financial reviews to Management Team, EXCO and Service Line Leaders to portray the monthly financial performance of BDO in terms of profit and loss.
oAnnual accounts to the management team, EXCO and Service Line Leaders to provide the annual financial performance of BDO
•Assisting with the development and maintenance of all finance reports
•Ownership of all internal and external reporting
•Ensuring controls on Payroll, Debtors , Creditors, Procurement, WIP, Revenue and system controls are put in place and monitored
•Ensuring all accounting activities and internal audits comply with financial regulations
•Reviewing and Reconciling accounts as required
•Ensuring adherence to all monthly calendar deadlines
Annual external audit
•Assuming full responsibility for external audits and Annual Financial Statements.
People Development and Management
•Providing leadership, coaching and ongoing performance feedback to team members
•Ensuring that the skills and experience of the team is consistent with the business needs for providing quality in present and future services
•Establishing clear organisational structures and succession plans aligned with appropriate responsibilities, accountabilities and personal development for all staff, in line with any anticipated growth
•Providing support for all Finance staff in keeping with the BDO Values.
•Knowledge sharing and upliftment of Finance team skills base
•Providing management training and guidance for team members in a supervisory role
•Completion of staff appraisals for the Finance Department, on an annual basis
•Reviewing the work of colleagues when necessary to identify compliance issues and provide advice or training as deemed necessary
•Keeping abreast of relevant changes on own field of work i.e. law amendments, new practice notes, attend technical meetings, etc.
•Identifying personal areas of development and engaging with the CFO to upskill and improve through training, formal development programs and online self-development
•Writing thought leadership commentary/ blogs and technical articles for BDO , participating in interviews and panel discussions representing BDO and Finance initiatives
•B.Com, B.Compt, BSc or other relevant qualification
•Registered as a CA(SA) with SAICA
•At least 5 years proven experience in Financial Management
•Advanced Excel skills
•Good knowledge of Financial systems environment and understanding of the interaction between different modules and functional area
•A detailed understanding of the KPI methodology, CI tracking and key value drivers
•Sound knowledge of IFRS, Tax and Companies Act
•Implementation of financial accounting philosophy and measurements within operational environments
•Has a well-developed knowledge of business operations
•Ability to influence operational and functional personnel to achieve cost reduction and realize cost and efficiency savings
•Ability to identify key drivers and opportunities to improve business performance
•Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
